Dee Dee's Bibliotherapy Corner

Happy January!  The holiday season is over.  We've given our gifts, taken down our lights (well, most of us have), and turned our thoughts towards the New Year.  This often means thinking about what we have accomplished over the last year, what we're proud of and what we're dissatisfied with.  What do we remember most about 2008 and how can 2009 be a better year?  I like to consider those "bite-size lessons" that we can all use to become kinder, more caring individuals.

One of the things people have confided in me lately is that they'd like to be more outgoing and feel more relaxed when making conversation. The books I've selected for this month's "Corner" each deal with different aspects for self improvement. 4,000 Questions for Getting to Know Anyone and Everyone is great for "conversing" with others. Trauma Stewardship is outstanding for those working in the trauma field who find it impossible to separate themselves from their difficult jobs once their day is over; Be The Star You Are helps us celebrate little things in life. The Velveteen Principles serves as a reminder about what it means to be  "real".

Personally, this is one of my favorite times of the year.  This year I'd like to become more skillful at my job, multitask more efficiently, and spend  more quality time with my family. It's beneficial to become introspective and determine what we can do to move forward, to improve our mental and physical health, and to empower others, since who we are and how we present ourselves has an enormous effect on so many around us.

For the books below, I have selected less well-known titles. Keep in mind these are just a few of the many books we carry on self improvement.

For advice on additional resources on any issues - don't hesitate to call Self Esteem Shop (800-251-8336) and speak with myself or one our knowledgeable staff members.  Drop into our store if you're in the neighborhood (32839 Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak, Michigan). And know that you can send inquiries my way (Deanne@selfesteemshop.com) and I'll do my best to find the perfect resource for you.

Cookies: Bite Size Life Lessons
by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
Is there anyone who doesn't have a great memory of baking cookies - making a mess, licking  the batter from the bowl, and savoring the smell that wafts through the house?  What's so special about Cookies: Bite Size Life Lessons is that it breaks down our manners and attitudes as analogous to the steps of baking, sharing, and eating cookies.  This is great to read with one child or with a group to reinforce behaviors, including patience ("waiting and waiting for cookies to be done") and trustworthiness ("If you ask me to hold your cookie until you come back, when you come back, I will still be holding your cookie").  Using cookies as a metaphor to teach or remind kids how to be a thoughtful person and good friend helps them feel like they understand these grown-up notions. The full-page pictures are just too cute. Share this book with children while waiting for cookies to bake.

4,000 Questions for Getting to Know
Anyone and Everyone

by Barbara Ann Kipfer
When my son was in college he told me he was trying to determine the best way to relate to  new people around him with whom  he felt he had little in common.  He commented how helpful the questions he'd recalled from the  book  were during some of those potentially uncomfortable conversations.  The open-ended and wide range of questions on topics from love and politics to school and spirituality are real catalysts for one-on-one or for groups.

Trauma Stewardship
by Laura Van Dernoot Lipsky
I don't know how this book has flown under the radar. Lauren Van Dernoot Lipsky is someone who astutely understands "vicarious trauma" experienced by those employed in the field. She has worked with trauma survivors for over 20 years, and readers identify with her experiences. In the clearest and most concise terms I've seen in books of this nature, Van Dernoot Lipsky (with some hysterical illustrations) details methods for trauma workers to lead a more balanced life without sacrificing the quality of their work. She profiles numerous public service figures and offers dozens of anecdotes that all seem to center around the question of why trauma workers do what we do. This book is a gem and should be required reading for those in the trauma field.

Be the Star You Are
by Cynthia Brian
Cynthia Brian shares short anecdotes that  deal with  feelings  such as abundance, humor, celebration, and ingenuity. She shares humorous tales, many of them based on her experiences growing up in a large family. Each story is followed by a relaxing exercise.

The Velveteen Principles: A Guide to Becoming Real---Hidden Wisdom from a Children's Classic
by Toni Raiten-D'Antonio
My mom used to read me the story of The Velveteen Rabbit before I'd go to bed.  Wow, that makes me feel old.  But it's one of those stories I have never forgotten: the raggedy rabbit who doesn't know he's a toy. Velveteen Principles uses the The Velveteen Rabbit as the foundation to explore what it is that makes us authentic, and offers a valuable perspective on the 12 principles of being "real."

Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life
by Steven Hayes
This is a book that people are constantly talking about at many of the conferences I attend.  Steven Hayes is the guru of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which takes bits and pieces of behavioral therapies and expands on them to help us look at our problems in a new way.  This workbook carefully guides in a manner that few do, teaching us to not scrutinize our problems and distorted thoughts.  Rather, Hayes offers a step-by-step method on how to accept problems (almost like a spectator looking in), become less self-judgmental, recognize our core values and achieve our goals. This book clarifies how much trying to avoid an issue really intensifies it.  Explaining Mindfulness, through clear examples and exercises, Hayes illustrates how to pay closer attention to the world around us and change for the better.  This is THE book to have on ACT.

What is Bibliotherapy?
Simply put, Bibliotherapy uses books to help children of all ages overcome challenges and ease the discussion of their problems.  This therapeutic method can be used in therapy settings, at home, or in school.

Bibliotherapy is NOT a quick fix but reading about a character dealing with a similar issue helps children recognize their problems are not so unique.  They observe how characters cope with situations and solve problems.

By addressing events and emotions the character in the book is experiencing, bibliotherapy provides the safe distance children may need if they're not ready to directly share their own thoughts and feelings on  troubling issues.

Additionally, bibliotherapy generates easy follow-up activities for the child who wants to "try on"  behaviors demonstrated by the story's characters through role-playing, puppetry, retelling, art and other expressive techniques.
