DeeDee's Corner Separation anxiety is a common theme from the "countdown" to kindergarten to the "countdown" to college. Some kids separate easily while others seem to want to climb back into the womb. "Don't leave me!" Those agonizing words trigger early school memories for many grownups now preparing to send their own children to school. When it comes to preparing for new and potentially scary situations, just remember: knowledge, predictability and experience are important elements in diminishing anxiety. We first address the issue of separation anxiety (The Kissing Hand) and the fear of not being prepared (Countdown to Kindergarten). Angst at Middle School (Middle School:The Real Deal) and High School (Social Skills Picture Book) involve issues like starting a new school, making new friends, "fitting in" and academic pressures. Parental anxiety often emerges as offspring start college (Letting Go). Parents can help children (and themselves) when youngsters begin elementary school (Helping Your Child Overcome Separation Anxiety or School Refusal). When children experience prolonged anxiety, parents should consider professional help. Separation Anxiety in Children and Adolescents is a helpful manual for clinicians. Resiliency in Schools aimed at educators is also described below. ![]() The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn Beautifully illustrated, this is a classic and powerful tale of a little raccoon (Chester) who is fearful about starting school. His mother shows him how he can take her love with him anywhere, even to school, and find comfort when he becomes anxious. She kisses his palm and tells him that he can hold his hand to his face and feel her kiss anytime. "Whenever you feel lonely and need a little loving from home, just press your hand to your cheek and think, 'Mommy loves you'... that very kiss will jump to your face and fill you with toasty warm thoughts." The kissing hand sticks, even if he washes his hands, and it really works! Children identify with animal characters, like Chester in The Kissing Hand. It affords them the distance to safely talk about the character's fears and other feelings (similar to their own). It's also an opportunity to talk about having two feelings at the same time, such as being excited to go to school but worried that they won't have a friend. Kissing Hand stickers at the back of the book can be used at home and at school. A lovely activity someone shared with me uses pre-cut paper or felt hearts for each child, and children trace their hand or use the stickers from the book to make their own "kissing hands." Additional books by "Kissing Hand" author Audrey Penn, address common issues such as sibling rivalry (Pocket Full of Kisses), moving (A Kiss Goodbye), and bullying (Chester Raccoon and the Big Bad Bully). Countdown to Kindergarten
by Alison McGhee Hearing that you must know how to tie your shoes before entering kindergarten, an endearing 5-year-old girl becomes anxious as she tries to master the skill. When she finally gets to kindergarten, she finds that she is not alone in her fears, and that, in fact, she is perfectly prepared. The engaging story and delightful illustrations make this a reassuring laugh-aloud book for children and parents. New situations are stressful. In this story the narrator uses imaginative strategies to deal with her "shoe-tying" problem. The night before school starts, she confides in her cat ("the therapist"), expressing additional fears: "What if they don't let me have snack time or I miss the last bell?...What if I have to wear a sign that says 'Velcro Girl?'" Following the story, children can be encouraged to create preposterous worries that other kids their age might have. Children's concerns are normalized when they read that other characters share their fears. Only $6.00
More ideas - a practice walk through the school, classroom, and playground, if possible, is helpful in that it offers the predictability, experience, and knowledge helpful in decreasing anxiety. Arrange for short "play dates" with future classmates. Role plays, with parents & children playing different characters give youngsters the opportunity to "try on" different behaviors. Middle School: The Real Deal
by Juliana Farrell & Beth Mayall
Middle school is a big change for most elementary graduates, and there are so many new things! Locker combinations, class schedules, electives - it can be overwhelming. There's also a big difference between teachers at the elementary level and those in middle school. The authors identify six common teacher types (like the "rules-aholic" and the "slacker" teacher). They describe the best ways for students to deal with them. The authors explain the best ways to stay organized, get to class on time, and enjoy the transition. Reading "cover to cover" is not essential - the reader can select which chapters are most pertinent. The only caveat is that some of the cartoons look a tad childish, but the great info and ideas make it worth the read. Only $7.99

There are no courses designed for parents sending their kids off to college, nor is there a parent protocol for this part of school life. This book is the closest thing to a parent prep course I've come across. Part I offers an overview of adolescent development, helping parents discern what are typical behaviors and issues and what might be a red flag calling for intervention. Part II provides a chronological guide from the last year of high school through college graduation, including practical strategies to overcome hurdles, improve communication, and foster self-reliance.
I smiled when I first saw the title, "Letting Go: A Parent's Guide to Understanding the College Years," and reflected on the similarities between toddlers and teenagers, as both want independence while staying connected to the "nest." As the saying goes, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." The authors have captured the changing landscape of the college campus as they share wisdom from experienced administrators, faculty, parents and students. Although the emphasis is on university away from home, parents of commuters or those attending vocational school will also gain a great deal of knowledge.

Adolescence is a difficult time, but for individuals who have trouble with social cues the intricacies of high school and young adulthood can be overwhelming. The Social Skills Picture Book for High School and Beyond contains photos of actual students from various ethnic backgrounds demonstrating the 'right' and 'wrong' ways of communicating. Although, written for students with Asperger Syndrome, this is the ideal manual for "quirky" kids. Topics include making new friends, asking questions in class, saying hello and goodbye, working as part of a group, asking someone out on a date, interviewing for a job, and much more.
