For almost 20 years, the Self Esteem Shop has been serving the mental health community, with an array of therapeutic resources. We carry books, play therapy toys, puppets, posters, and DVDs for the mental health practitioner and the layman and we're constantly updating our website with new and exciting resources.
For children, summer brings with it the promise of freedom from school, swimming pools, ice cream and long days spent with friends. As adults, we may not have summers off, but the approach of longer days and sunshine still brings with it the anticipation of relief from the stresses and worries of the colder months. This year - as local, national and international communities - we have faced devastating natural disasters including tsunamis, severe storms, tornadoes, earthquakes and wildfires. As we work to pick up the pieces and move forward, it can be easy to forget to take care of ourselves and find the relief we need. This issue will focus on trauma and burnout and ways to cope with effects of the tragedy around us, while still living and thriving in our daily lives.

DeeDee's Recommendations for
Trauma Resources
As difficult as traumatic experiences can be for adults to process and
deal with, it can be so much harder for children. It can be daunting
for a child to deal with trauma because many children, particularly
younger children, don't yet have the language to understand or express
some of the more complex emotions that trauma and grief may bring on.
Books and stories can provide a safe environment for children to
interact with their feelings of fear and sadness, by allowing them to
identify with characters whose feelings and experiences mirror their
own.
The empowering story of Brave Bart: A Story for Traumatized and Grieving Children, is about a little black kitten who experienced something "very bad, sad and scary."
Bart used to be a very happy kitten, but after the very bad, sad, and scary thing happens he no longer takes care of himself, he doesn't enjoy the games he used to play, he is too afraid to sleep and he even blames himself for what happened. One day, Bart meets another cat whose name is Helping Hannah. She helps Bart to cope with his experiences and recover the feeling of control over his own life. This story teaches children that while bad experiences cannot be undone, there is hope and they don't always have to live with the fear or grief the experience created. They can be survivors just like Brave Bart!
As individuals who provide care to others, it can be easy to lose sight of oneself. Trauma Stewardship: An Everyday Guide to Caring for Self While Caring for Others calls attention to this pressing issue. Burnout or "trauma exposure response" are common problems for those working in the field of Trauma Stewardship. Trauma Stewardship is a term van Dernoot developed for individuals who work in the field of trauma management, and is derived from the definition of the word stewardship: "The careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care."
Trauma Stewardship comes in many forms and it is not exclusive to those working with victims of abuse, natural disasters, or other forms of human trauma, but also those who take on stewardship of our planet and its future. As caregivers we are often tempted to place the well-being of others before our own. In doing so we jeopardize our own mental, physical and spiritual health, and also those we care for.
The author's honesty and humor make Trauma Stewardship a very approachable read. Relevant to professionals in the field, as well as those without formal training, who find themselves in the position of being a caregiver. This resource provides readers with the tools to first identify their own trauma exposure responses and then to begin to deal with them in a healthy and productive way. As Jon Conte points out in his forward, this book does not attempt to provide an instruction manual to its reader. Instead, the wisdom, techniques and exercises within this book provide a compass by which each individual may chart his or her own path towards a healthier self and in turn better serve those they care for.
Since its appearance in the Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1980, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has become a widely diagnosed disorder. Perhaps the most well known sufferers of PTSD are the brave men and women who serve in the armed forces around the world, but PTSD can be brought on by any traumatic experience. Individuals affected by this severely debilitating disorder are just as varied and unique as the experiences that cause it, and thus our ability as a society to understand and assist these individuals is vitally important.
This great new book, Trauma Essentials, was just released April 2011 and is aimed at professionals and laypersons alike, with its number one goal being to improve "the quality of life-on a day-to-day basis-of the traumatized individual." Trauma Essentials provides information about the history of PTSD, theories, techniques and options for and about dealing with PTSD in a clear and accessible fashion. Rothschild emphasizes the individuality of each sufferer of PTSD and the importance of creating approaches for treatment on a case-by-case basis. In the final chapters, Rothschild also addresses the strain that caring for someone with PTSD can cause and provides insights on how to cope as a caregiver. Rothschild's 2006 book,
Help for the Helper: The Psychophysiology of Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma also deals with the issues of caregiver burnout, and is a useful resource for anyone interested in this topic.
Conferences on Trauma & Burnout!
In keeping with our theme, we would be remiss if we
failed to mention two upcoming conferences which deal specifically with
these issues. We at the Self Esteem Shop have been attending both of
these wonderful conferences for many years and believe strongly in the
beneficial workshops and learning experiences that they provide. Each of
these conferences provides attendees with the valuable opportunity to
gain insight into dealing with trauma and burnout, and offers methods
for developing creative interventions.
The first conference is the 15th Annual Virginia Association for
Play Therapy Conference (VAPT). VAPT will be held June 23-25 at the
James Madison University Festival Conference Center in Harrisonburg,
Virginia. VAPT is aimed at school counselors, psychologists, mental
health counselors, social workers, psychiatrists, graduate students and
other experienced professionals who work with children and families.
The second conference is The National Institute for Trauma and Loss
in Children's Childhood Trauma Practitioners Assembly. TLC conference
will be held July 12-15 at the Macomb ISD Education Center, in Clinton
Township, Michigan. This conference provides individuals with the
opportunity complete or renew their TLC Trauma Specialist Certification,
learn new strategies for working with traumatized children, adolescents
and families, network with hundreds of other industry professionals and
earn 6 continuing education units per day towards professional
licensure.
Finally for those working in the field of trauma care or simply
interested in further investigating this topic, we would like to share
two helpful links. The first is TLC's official website, and the second
is a link to The National Child Traumatic Stress Network which was
brought to my attention in a recent online correspondence with Dr. Anne
Stewart.
Anne is a presenter for VAPT, a TLC faculty member and the founder
and president of the Virginia Play Therapy Association. Having most
recently returned from working with trauma victims in Beirut, she has
worked both internationally and nationally to provide relief to trauma
victims through the use of play therapy. Anne has designed and
implemented projects addressing the psychosocial problems of landmines
in Lebanon, Jordan, Bosnia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Mozambique. In the
United States, she has served as a consultant and service provider after
Hurricane Katrina, the 9/11 attacks, the Virginia Tech University
shootings, and other catastrophic events.
