Fall News

The month of September is a transitory time of year. The first month of autumn brings to mind many things, from students rushing back to school to the vibrant changing leaves, the end of the summer season often feels bittersweet. We at Self Esteem Shop have a very important issue on our minds this first month of fall. Every September marks the observance of Suicide Prevention Month. In honor of all of the families, survivors, patients and clinicians who have battled suicide, we'd like to share some valuable resources with you.

Books for Brave Souls

But I Didn't Get to Say Goodbye does a beautiful job of  helping young people deal with the suicide of a loved one. The Story is told from the perspective of an 11 year-old boy who struggles to deal with a parent`s suicide.  This interactive guide provides a glimpse into a child`s traumatic and life changing experience. When it comes to treating suicidal patients, a strong therapeutic alliance can quite literally save a person's life. Building a Therapeutic Alliance with the Suicidal Patient consults the knowledge of a group of clinicians and researchers that explore the "Aeschi approach" to clinical suicide prevention. It involves mental health professionals working with patients at risk for suicide recognizing a fundamental conflict at the heart of clinical practice, when it comes to the patient`s story, the patient is the expert. Dying to Be Free is powerful. Beverly Cobain and Jean Larch courageously break through the complex  emotions, brutal stigma, and detrimental silence to offer this gentle, healing guide for family members who have been affected by suicide. Cobain's achingly honest personal account are paired with tender recollections from suicide survivors and provide powerful insight into the confusion, fear, and guilt that family members often suffer through. At a recent conference,  one of the participants asked me about a book for a child who spends his days exercising his digits on keyboards.  How do we get the child to realize there's a whole world out there  beyond video games and smartphones? One of my favorite books came to mind immediately. Everybody Needs a Rock is  so simple, yet so powerful. It has great instructional value and lessons about materialism; it's especially great because kids can come up with their own rules.  It's a great exercise in imagination

In my office, this has been a wonderful termination gift.   The child  is encouraged to select their  very own "special stone" from  my collection. We decorate our rocks and the child takes their special stone with them.  I like to share the sentiment  of "wouldn't it be cool if we are holding  our stones at the very same time?" The child who panics may have their special rock in their pocket  for those times when they need self-soothing just touching that rock and its symbolic reminder to take deep breaths. Some kids may even paint  words like "breathe" on their special rock as a reminder.
The first sentence of the book says it all. "Everybody needs a rock."The young narrator  expresses his  sympathy  for kids who don't have a rock for a friend, and for those kids who have lots of material things instead like "tricycles, bicycles, horses, elephants, goldfish, three-room playhouses." He shares ten rules for exploring outside to find just the perfect rock.

As I shared the story with conference participant, Sherri Knudsen, she told me about a great activity she uses with her home-based clients.  The rocks are placed on a baking sheet and placed in an oven at 200 degrees. This makes them easy to decorate with crayons and the designs last longer.

The story ends with "I'm going out to play a game that takes just me and one rock to play.   I happen to have a rock here in my hand..." This story is a fit for children of all ages and can be connected in so many different ways for each child.  For some, it might be an opportunity for a family to read the story and then make an outing to search for the perfect rock.  For another, it may normalize their feelings and yet another may find ideas for companionship. This book is beautiful and creative. It can inspire so many different thoughts and activities. Everybody needs to read this book!
